The BMW Z1 was first released to the press in 1986, but was officially presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1987. The Z1 began mass production in 1989 and ceased production in 1991. The model was a two-seat roadster. The most distinctive feature of this model were the doors, which dropped down into the door sills with a touch of a button. Demand for the model was so high that there was 5000 orders before production had even begun. Only 8000 of the Z1 were ever produced.
The Z1 used a number of innovative features never seen before at the time of production. The model included removable body panels and a composite undertray. The body is made completely of plastic and is removable from the Chassis. At the time of launch BMW suggested that buyers purchase an additional set of body panels, so the driver can change the colour of the car from time to time.
The interior include motorcycle gauges which made the interior different to the models around at the time. The gauges were fitted with red needles whilst most other models were fitted with white needles. The seats are hand made and the model includes air conditioning.
