The BMW 1 Series have been manufactured since 2004, and were intended to be the rival to the Audi A3. The series is a line of small family cars. The BMW 1 Series is the successor to the BMW Compact and is available in four different body styles. The body styles include a 3 door hatchback, (E81), a coupe, (E82), a 5 door hatchback, (E83) and a convertible, (E84). The 1 Series was originally launched as a 5 door hatchback and was released as a coupe in 2007.
The 1 Series shares some characteristics with the 3 Series. The chassis, structural design, hardware and electronic features are the same as the 3 Series. It has been argued that the 1 Series is the least successful in BMW series range, due to the exterior features. The interior does improve the look of the series. The dashboard is very similar to the dashboard in the 3 Series. There is reasonable amount of room in the front for the driver and the front seat passenger. However, there is limited room in the back for rear passengers. The room in the rear is slightly larger in the Coupe and Convertible versions of the 1 Series. There is also limited room in the boot. The cabin is very focussed towards the driver. The seating position is comfortable which makes the drive an enjoyable experience.
The BMW 1 Series include a number of safety features. There is an antilock braking system that cuts in when the driver appears to be in trouble. There is a dynamic stability control which helps prevent the loss of control and a dynamic traction control which helps prevent wheel spin. All models include 6 air bags and are fitted with run flat tyres. This means that if the wheel has a puncture, you can still drive on them for a limited amount of time.
