The BMW M5 was first launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show in February 1984. The M5 was designed as a high performance version of the BMW 5-Series executive car. The M5 is one of the best known sports sedan. There were four different versions of the M5 dependent on were they were going to be exported. There is the right-hand drive (RHD) UK spec, the left-hand drive (LHD) Euro spec, the right-hand drive (RHD) UK spec, the LHD North American (NA) spec for the United States and Canada, and the RHD South African (ZA) spec.
The high ceiling and large rear doors results in plenty of interior space, both in the front of the car and in the rear of the car. The boot is also spacious. The front seats are comfortable and come equipped with active seat bolster support. The added extras make this car a very comfortable drive. Electronic Damper Control offers three different suspension settings. This makes the car able to cope in most conditions, sport, normal and comfort.
The M5 is fitted with several safety features. The model is fitted with 8 air bags as standard and advanced stability control. This helps prevent loss of control. The M5 is fitted with a system called brake drying. The pads are gently applied to the discs in wet conditions that clears the film of water on the brakes and prepares the car for more effective braking. Brake pre-tensioning is also a safety feature of the M5. This means the car recognises the driver’s foot coming off the accelerator and prepares the car for an emergency stop.
