The BMW Z8 started life as a concept car called the Z07 that was first produced in 1997. The Z07 was originally designed as styling exercise to celebrate the 1956-1959 BMW 507. The Z07 was so well received at the 1997 Tokyo Auto Show that BMW decided to produce a limited production model called the Z8. Only 5703 of the Z8’s were ever produced with approximately half being exported to America.
A number of changes were made to the Z07 before it was launched as the BMW Z8. The windshield was extended and was fitted with a larger front airdam. This improved the aerodynamics of the car. The four spoke steering wheel of the Z07 was replaced with a three spoke steering wheel in the Z8. Despite these few changes, the Z8 remained faithful to the design of the Z07.
The Z8 is smaller than other cars in its class. It is 4400 mm smaller than the Porshe 911, but is 65mm wider. This gives the Z8 a more aggressive looking stance. The exterior has several distinctive features. The chromed side-air in takes have a thin neon in the middle of them which serve as indicators. The rear lights are ultra thin and flat, which add the distinctive look of the model.
The interior includes adjustable seats that make the car feel more comfortable for the driver. However, the steering wheel only has reach adjustment. The interior of the model is the same colour as the outside of the car. The dashboard is not user friendly. The sun reflects off the dashboard, which can easily distract the driver. There is plenty of head room when the hood is up, so the occupants do not feel claustrophobic.
